An Effective Learning Resource Program for Children with Dyslexia
Summer Reading Academy
What is the Summer Reading Academy?
Each year, children who struggle with reading attend Longleaf Academy’s intensive 4-week Summer Academy program. Using the Orton-Gillingham approach, students develop powerful word attack and spelling skills while also receiving essential phonemic awareness training—a foundational skill for reading fluency. Research shows that phonemic awareness strengthens both decoding and spelling abilities.

More about the Summer Reading Academy
Each year, children who struggle with reading attend Longleaf Academy’s intensive 4-week Summer Academy program. Research shows that phonemic awareness strengthens both decoding and spelling abilities.
CLASSES
Students participate in 90-minute sessions, meeting Monday through Thursday for four weeks in a small-group setting with a 4:1 student-teacher ratio. Our Summer Academy is offered in two locations: Southern Pines and Fayetteville. Each child receives a personalized lesson tailored to their current reading level, ensuring targeted instruction that meets their specific needs.
LESSON PLANS
The key to our success lies in our structured, sequential lesson plans, which train the “reading brain” through a whole-to-part and part-to-whole approach. Highly trained Orton-Gillingham practitioners lead every session, using research-backed methods to develop reading skills effectively.
COMPREHENSION
In addition to intensive reading instruction, students learn essential comprehension strategies to make reading more fluent and meaningful. Expanding vocabulary and engaging the “reading brain” through language discovery fosters curiosity and confidence in young readers.
